Wheels and tyres are used to make it easier to transport a load over a distance. Wheels rotate on their axis through its centre, allowing movement or transportation. Wheels are also used to perform or sustain labour in the workings of machines. Wheels on an axle overcome friction by rolling, and motion is achieved either by gravity or an external force applied to the wheel. Through time this has been achieved by manpower, horse or other beasts of burden, and eventually engines and motors. Tyres are ring-shaped coverings that fit around wheel rims to protect them and provide better performance by functioning as a shock-absorbing cushion.

Most wheels and tyres for sale in the UK are pneumatic, comprising a doughnut-shaped body of cords and wires encased in rubber and generally filled with compressed air to form an inflatable cushion. Historically they have been made from synthetic rubber, natural rubber, fabric, and wire, along with other compound chemicals. Tyres consist of a tread and a body. The tread provides traction while the body ensures support. Before rubber was invented, the first versions of tires were simply bands of metal that fitted around wooden wheels.

Used wheels and tyres are a great way to save money, as modern tyres are built to last decades. The first practical pneumatic tire was made by Scottish veterinarian John Boyd Dunlop. He created tyres in 1887 for his son's bicycle, in an effort to prevent the headaches his son had while riding on rough roads.
